The Dean's Office has 27 members of staff who run its activities in their different capacities and positions.

The Department has a full time staff of 17, 3 part time lecturers and 1 Professor emeritus who conduct courses in the thematic areas of:- Biometry and Computer Applications; Crop and Pasture Physiology and Production; Entomology and Pest Management; Genetics and Plant Breeding; Seed Science and Plant Genetic Resources; Plant Biotechnology and Biosafety; Horticulture, and; Plant Pathology for good undergraduate and postgraduate courses and training programs.

The department has fourteen permanent members of academic staff and three Teaching Assistants on contract terms, nine of whom are PhD degree holders while the others are pursuing PhD or MSc degrees. Other scholars of various specializations support the Department.

Established within the Faculty of Agriculture, Makerere University, in the 1960s as a Department of Animal Production, the Department offers courses to undergraduate students of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Agribusiness management, and Land use management. Graduate programs leading to MSc. and PhD are offered by the highly trained and competent staff.

The department offers both undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes in the areas of Agricultural Processing and Food Engineering, Soil and Water Engineering, Farm power and Machinery, Structures and Environment Engineering.  In addition, the department teaches service courses to other degree programmes within the Faculty of Agriculture and the University.

To drive the activities of the Department, there are 17 members of staff with experience in different areas of Food Science, Food Technology and Human Nutrition. The majority of the academic staff hold PhD degrees obtained from different universities in and outside Uganda and this give a good mix of experience.
