Computer Lab Rules

Monday, 09.14.2009, 11:49am (GMT)

A well equipped computer laboratory with good air conditioning

  1. Do not change any of the software settings used on the computers. This includes such things as colors, patterns, backgrounds, and options. Changing these settings can interfere with the normal operation of the computer and is considered vandalism. Do not load any programs on the computers unless specifically authorized to do so.
  2. Don't turn off Computers. Once a computer is turned on, leave it on. It will be turned off at the end of the day.
  3. Do not leave important data files on the hard drives of the computers in the lab. We routinely go through the machines and delete files that are not part of the normal software suite. Copy your data files to floppy disks or USBs and take them with you.
  4. Keep the lab clean and tidy. Put things back when you are finished with them, including keyboards, mice, and chairs, and leave the computers as you would want to find them. Do not move the computers around.
  5. Do not download software from the Internet onto the computers in the lab unless authorized to do so.
  6. A Makerere University ID, or other official ID is required to use the labs.
  7. No Chatting or Gamming. Lab computers are for academic work and research use. Students using them for chat or games may be asked to relinquish them for their proper use.
  8. Mobile Phones. All cell phones and pagers should be turned off while in the lab.
  9. Noise. Faculty of Agriculture Computer Labs serve as a shared study area, where noise must be kept to a minimum. In consideration of other students working in the lab, you are expected to speak softly and limit conversation with others. You may not play music in the lab. Persons making excessive noise and disturbing others will be asked to leave the lab. Repeat offenders will have their access restricted.
  10. Smoking. The computer lab is a smoke-free zone. There will be no smoking, chewing tobacco, weed or other tobacco products allowed the lab at any time.
  11. Time Limits. When demand for lab machines is high, a 1-hour time limit will be placed on use of all computers in the lab. This will ensure that students have an opportunity to access Faculty computers.
  12. Copyright and Licensing. The Faculty of Agriculture enforces legal protections provided by copyright and licensing of computer programs and data. No copying of any software from the computer labs will be allowed. Any user caught making illegal copies will be subject to disciplinary action.
  13. Logging In. Users are required to log into the Makerere University Network and systems with their own email address and password. You may not use someone else's login and password to access the University Network. You may not allow anyone to use your login and password to access the University Network. Violation of these rules can result in revoking of your account.
  14. Logging Out. You must log out of the Makerere University Network and Email Account when you leave the computer labs -- even if only for a short time. Failure to do so may result in someone else accessing your account without your knowledge. Computers may not be saved for your use while you are away from the lab. You are responsible for any violation of the Faculties policies that occur with your account, even when you did not perform the action.

Report any problems you encounter with equipment, software or individuals in the lab to:
