Dr. Levy Kasisira - Head
The Department of Agricultural Engineering is based in the Faculty of Agriculture, Makerere University. It has a proficient human resource to teach, undertake research and development related to the field of Agricultural Engineering. It therefore effectively addresses its major task of developing human resource that can apply technological and engineering tools to increase production and efficiency of the national agricultural sector while preserving the quality of the environment.

The agricultural engineering programmes, offered in this department, develop graduates with comprehensive education, preparing them for a wide variety of employment options in industry, consulting, local governments and academia. Since the current government policies of plan for Modernization of Agriculture and NAADS emphasize among others mechanized agriculture, added value to agricultural produce, irrigation and conservation of natural resources, this Department can be a key player with its agricultural engineering degree programmes.

Vision
To evolve into a self sustaining resource base delivering client for industrial sector.

Mission
In pursuit of our vision, we train, research and disseminate appropriate agricultural engineering technologies that meet the needs of the current and future generations.

Objectives

  • Conduct Basic, Strategic and Applied Research to foster Agricultural development.
  • Disseminate appropriate technologies and innovations.
  • Initiate and strengthen National and International Linkages and to provide consultancy services to public and private sector
Programmes
The department offers both undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes in the areas of Agricultural Processing and Food Engineering, Soil and Water Engineering, Farm power and Machinery, Structures and Environment Engineering.  In addition, the department teaches service courses to other degree programmes within the Faculty of Agriculture and the University.

It also offers demand driven client oriented short courses through the Continuing Agricultural Education Center (CAEC).

Research
The department conducts research in all its areas of specialization.  The following are some of the research projects that have been conducted.
  • Adaptive development of a hand pushed Knapsack Sprayer.
  • Development of Appropriate Animal Draft Power Technologies for Increased Agricultural Productivity for small-scale farming.
  • Evaluation of Coffee Drying Technologies to enhance coffee quality through mould of data for surface irrigation design and management at MUARIK.
  • Hydrological Assessment design and construction of 25 valley tanks in Luwero, Nakasongola and Masindi Districts of Uganda.
  • Formulation of guidelines for Rice growing in Wetlands and guidelines for crop production in Wetlands
  • Technical evaluation of drying up of privately owned Valley Tanks in Mbarara.
  • Introduction and Evaluation of Conservation Agriculture Technologies in the Lake Victoria basin
Consultancy
The Department offers consultancy services through a private company called AE Consulting Engineers LTD.  The services include but not limited to: Agro-processing Engineering, Soil and Water Resources Development, Farm Power and Machinery, and Management as well as Farm Structures and Environmental Engineering.

Future Plans
The department is due to start another degree programme called Bachelor of Rural Technology.  The degree programme will be a modular based programme targeting diploma holders and field personnel, and aims at imparting knowledge and skills to the targeted clientele to enable them handle effectively agricultural engineering related problems.
